The SKY community group brings together the interest of the Seddon, Kingsville and Yarraville communities to provide activities that work towards improving community connectedness and Social wellbeing.
The work of the SKY Community group commenced in 2002 when Michael Clarke and Janine Wiggins put together the first Kingsville Christmas carols in Beaver‘s reserve Kingsville. This event brought together Kingsville Primary and Wembley primary schools and local musicians as part of the very first community event of its type in the Kingsville district.
Over the past 23 years the SKY community group has put together numerous Carol‘s events, and music festivals such as Stoney Creek music festival and Sunshine daydream in Yarraville.
Going forward into 2025 and 2026 years, the SKY community group, working with local artists and musicians and general members of the community, intends to put together the Winterland. This is an event that attempt to bring young people together. This is part of a musical experience where young school aged musicians and performers will showcase their works and talents. The intention here is to give the young people, particularly from the Maribyrnong district, the opportunity to take to the stage and demonstrate their capability. As part of the Winterland experience, musicians and performers such as Rebecca Barnard, Shane O’Mara and Nick Barker will assess and provide advice as to how performers are able to improve and hone their skill. This is part of a developmental process that assumes that there is not one single approach that leads to social well-being and community connectedness. Regardless of it being sport, or the arts, the need for social connectedness and community well-being is a fundamental requirements for individual health, social well-being, and at the end of the day, social cohesion.
While there is no question of the value of social media and the uptake in use of the new technologies in forging a broad communications network and process. However, the reality is that the success of our community is based on face-to-face communication. Understanding the engagement process is implicit with face-to-face social connection. It really doesn’t matter what form the social connection takes, as long as it’s pro Social, we need to be able to talk to each other and relate to each other.
